Holy Scripture

Original Douai-Rheims, with commentary & Clementine Vulgate

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to HolyScripture.net the online home of the Original Douai-Rheims Bible & parallel Clementine Vulgate. This project has been made possible by the work of volunteers. Please consider supporting the Holy Scripture project volunteers with prayers, donations, and thanks.

First time readers, please read the Additional Information pages, to learn about the Holy Scripture project.

This project in brief, reproduces the original Douai-Rheims Bible for the free edification and enjoyment of the reader. This version, the most literal and accurate translation of the Vulgate, has long been inaccessible to the general populous through neglect, and the prevalence of other works, especially the Challoner Bible, which is what is commonly titled the Douai-Rheims version today. This title can be considered inapt, in that Challoner's revision is essentially a new work, separate from the original version created at Douai and Rheims.

The online version of the Douai-Rheims provided by the Holy Scripture project, reproduces faithfully the original Douai-Rheims Bible. The photographic facsimile versions of which are also available for download and use.

For the convenience of the reader, and compatibility with modern web-browsers the spelling of some words has been updated to the contemporary spelling, this removing the need to remember what are now no longer used English characters. No words have been changed in their meaning, with solely the updated spelling, the online version of the Douai-Rheims is presented in its pristine and original form.

In this online version is also contained the parallel Clementine Vulgate for comparison, as provided originally by the (unaffiliated) Clementine Vulgate Project, which has generously made this work available to the general public.

The combination of the Clementine Vulgate and original Douai-Rheims provides the most reliable and literal version of the Holy Scriptures available, an essential key for scholars as well as new readers.

The Holy Scripture project is advertisement-free, and will always remain so. Please remember the project in your gift giving and prayers.

If you wish you may now begin to read the original Douai-Rheims from the first pages, and its original introduction.
